When You Need Truck Repairs

Finding a truck repair shop when you need it most is far easier now than it was 20 years ago. Internet information sources are plentiful and deliver abundant choices. Many sources are friendly to mobile devices, and the larger smart phones can display most web sites intended for large computer monitors.

The National Truck and Trailer Services Breakdown Directory is one of the largest and most popular directories of truck repair shops online. The NTTS Breakdown Directory has been in continuous publication since 1989. In addition to basics like local phone directories, NTTS pulls data from many other sources.

NTTS verifies every entry in their directory by contacting each truck repair shop every year to verify all data published in the directory. This single policy ensures the most accurate data.

Truck Down is another directory listing businesses throughout the US and Canada. It has been operating since 1997. The Truck Down online directory has a detailed search feature that includes truck repair shops, machine shops, trailer shops, truck stops and truck-friendly motels.

America’s Independent Truckers’ Association (AITA) runs an online directory that is broken down into seven categories. The categories are Mechanical Truck Repair Shops, Automotive Collision Centers, Automotive Repair Centers, Commercial Tire Outlets, Truck Collision Centers, Winching and Towing, and Welding Shops. Businesses can submit their details to the AITA for inclusion in the appropriate directory.

Truck Repair Shops

Most people know what the inside of an automotive repair shop looks like. You might expect something similar for a truck repair shop, and in some ways, it is. The big difference (pun intended) is size. The hydraulic lift for a semi tractor is much larger, with a capacity of more than 10,000 pounds. Motorized, overhead lifts are essential for pulling engines and transmissions. Degreasing vats are many times bigger than anything an auto shop would have.

Truck mechanics use motorized and hydraulic tools to lift and move truck parts around frequently. Working under the hood of a diesel rig is much harder than it is on a car. For significant repairs, it is often necessary to pull the engine or at least remove surrounding parts like fenders and the front end.

US Truck Travel

According to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, as reported in 2010, US vehicles traveled nearly 2 trillion miles in 2008, in urban areas alone. Semi-trucks logged over 230 billion vehicle-miles in that same period. With that kind of usage, is it any wonder truckers need to find truck repair shops?
