SEO, Meta Tags - Helioza Tips

by Ray Franklin

Helioza SEO utilizes meta tags to display your keyword in the title, description and list of keywords.

Helioza Meta Tags

When you create a Helioza Page, you must provide a title and a description of the article. Optionally, you may also enter a list of keywords.

What you submit for each of these fields has a very large impact on how visible your page is to the rest of the internet. These field values will appear in what are called the 'meta tags' of the page. They are very important to the search engine optimization (SEO) of your page.

Now let's take a look at these 'meta tags' so you can see what's up. Here is a sample of the head portion of an HTML page. In this case, it is the first page of the Helioza SEO series of tips.

<head>

  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
  <meta name="keywords" content="seo,search engine optimization,marketing">
  <meta name="description" content="Search engine optimization (SEO) is built into Helioza pages. Using this feature correctly can position your page in the top ten results on Google for your target keyword.">
  <meta name="robots" content="INDEX,FOLLOW">
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="/StyleSheets/1/1.css" type="text/css">
</head>

This block of HTML begins with <head> and ends with </head>. In between are the meta tags.

Notice that the very first tag after <head> is <title>. This tag defines the title of the web page. The text between <title> and </title> is displayed in the title bar of your web browser when you load that page.

By design, each Helioza Page uses its title, the one you wrote, for the <title> tag. We do that because search engines use the page title for indexing. They also display that text as the link at the top of each results item.

It is also very important that the <title> tag is the very first tag after <head>. Many web pages insert other items ahead of the title. By placing the title first, right where the search engine spiders expect it, we provide the best SEO performance.

The fourth line in this snippet starts with '<meta name="keywords"'. That line defines the list of keywords that are important for this page.

Some people will say the keywords meta tag is not important for SEO. That is true if the only search engine you care about is Google. However, we want ALL search engines to notice our pages. Google does not use the keywords meta tag, but Bing, Yahoo and others do. So that is why we include this tag.

Right after keywords is the description meta tag. This is the text that Google displays below the title link in the search results. On Helioza Pages, the description meta tag contains the text from the Summary block at the top of the article.

Here is how it all appears in the Google results. This search was for an overheating dell b130, a Helioza Page.

SEO - Your Choices

To take advantage of these features, you must use them properly. First, you must have a core keyword phrase in mind. You will have selected this keyword by investigating current search patterns, search volume and the market value of the keyword. Now you must use that keyword on the page for the best possible SEO results.

SEO, Keyword Usage

SEO, Keyword Usage

Use your keyword in the title, preferably at the very beginning. If that is linguistically awkward, then use one or two words ahead of your keyword to make it sound good.

Next, place your keyword in the list of keywords. Add other, related keywords to this list. Be careful not to repeat words in this list. The search engines call this practice "keyword spamming."

Lastly, use your keyword in the description or summary of your article. Include other keywords as well. A good summary uses complete sentences to briefly describe the article, and is rich in keywords.
